Release date & Where to Watch

The highly anticipated Harry Potter series is set to premiere in 2026, with HBO aiming to provide fans with a fresh take on the beloved books. Initially announced as a Max original, the series will now air on HBO and stream on Max, following a strategic shift by the network to brand it as an HBO original.

Plot

The new Max Original Harry Potter series promises to explore each of J.K. Rowling's iconic books in greater depth, offering fans a detailed and faithful adaptation. Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, assured fans that the series would maintain the same level of care and craftsmanship that the franchise is known for and that it would remain true to the source material.

Early reports suggested that each season would cover one book from the Harry Potter series, which consists of seven novels. However, Bloys indicated the project would span "10 consecutive years," raising questions about the traditional one-season-per-book approach. Despite speculation, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) clarified that the "Fantastic Beasts" series would not be included in this new show. Instead, the series will focus solely on the Harry Potter novels, with each season bringing these beloved stories to life for a new generation.

For fans who felt that the original films left out significant details due to time constraints, this series is a chance to revisit the Wizarding World with more room to explore the intricacies of Rowling’s universe. The show is expected to include fan-favorite events and characters omitted from the films, such as Nearly Headless Nick’s Deathday Party in "Philosopher’s Stone" and Hermione’s S.P.E.W. (Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare) in "Goblet of Fire."

Cast

The new Harry Potter TV series will feature an entirely new cast, recasting the iconic roles originally played by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

HBO confirmed that the series aims to introduce a new generation of fans to the Wizarding World, with a fresh cast leading the way. Radcliffe and Watson, among other original cast members, have expressed their support for passing the torch but have no plans to reprise their roles.

Radcliffe, in particular, has made it clear that he’s content watching the new series as a fan and believes the creators will want to put their own stamp on the story without involving the original actors. He emphasized that the reboot deserves a "clean break" and that his involvement isn't necessary for the series to succeed.

Casting for the new series will begin once a showrunner is in place. As of late January 2024, Warner Bros. TV Group Chairman Channing Dungey mentioned that finding the right showrunner was the first priority before casting could begin. With Francesca Gardiner now on board as showrunner, the next step will be selecting young actors to embody the beloved characters, particularly as the first two books focus on 11 to 12-year-old children.

Trailer

There isn't a trailer for the Harry Potter TV series yet, but you can watch the announcement video below.

Will J.K. Rowling be Involved?

Yes, J.K. Rowling will be involved in the new Harry Potter TV series as an executive producer. Given her creative control over the franchise, her participation was a significant factor in bringing the series to the screen. The agreement for her involvement was finalized in 2023, and she will be working alongside longtime collaborators Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts, as well as David Heyman, who developed the original films. Warner Bros. Television and Rowling's production company, Brontë Film and TV, are handling the production.

Despite the controversy surrounding Rowling's outspoken views on transgender issues, HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery remain committed to her involvement. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO & Max Content, emphasized that Rowling's insights will be valuable for the series, stating, "She’s an executive producer on the show, and her insights are going to be incredibly helpful." Bloys also highlighted that the network is focused on what's on screen, underscoring their long-standing relationship with the Harry Potter franchise.

However, Rowling's involvement has sparked concern among fans, particularly given her strained relations with some of the film's original stars, like Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who have publicly supported trans rights. Despite this, Warner Bros. Discovery continues to stand by Rowling's role in the new adaptation.

How many Seasons of the Harry Potter TV Series will There be?

Max has revealed that the Harry Potter TV series is planned to span a full decade, providing ten years of content for fans to enjoy. This announcement dispels the earlier theory that each season would correspond directly to one of the seven books in the series. While it's expected that the show will cover all seven books, it's possible, as with the film adaptations, that some of the books could be split into multiple seasons. However, it's still unclear whether the decade-long plan means there will be ten seasons in total or simply that the series will run for ten years. HBO has yet to confirm the exact structure of their adaptation.

“We have the freedom to pursue anything we want,” Zaslav has said, though he clarified, “Some things will need to involve J.K. Rowling, while in other areas, we have full creative control. This is a comprehensive effort to bring Harry Potter to Max, but we're also exploring other projects.”

While the specifics of these boundaries remain uncertain, it is clear that Warner Bros. Discovery is eager to expand the Potter universe. Since taking charge of the merged company, Zaslav has repeatedly emphasized his focus on franchises, with the Harry Potter IP being a top priority. According to Deadline, there's a possibility that multiple writers from the recent pitches could be involved, and Max is open to developing more than one Harry Potter project.

Behind the Scenes

Four months after Deadline revealed Francesca Gardiner as a finalist for rebooting a classic kids' franchise, the Succession consulting producer has officially secured the showrunner role. Gardiner outpaced fellow contenders Tom Moran and Kathleen Jordan for the position.

Gardiner, who contributed as a consulting producer on seasons three and four of Succession, will also serve as the series' writer and executive producer. Joining her is Succession collaborator Mark Mylod, who will direct multiple episodes while also taking on executive producer duties. Mylod is known for his direction of standout Succession episodes, including the iconic "Connor’s Wedding," as well as his work on Game of Thrones and the film The Menu.

Warner Bros. Television and the streaming service initially announced the project in April 2023 and invited a select group of creatives to pitch their ideas. In addition to Gardiner, Tom Moran, and Kathleen Jordan were among the finalists. Moran is known for creating Amazon’s The Devil’s Hour, while Jordan is the creator of Netflix’s Teenage Bounty Hunters.

David Heyman, a key producer from the Harry Potter film series and the Fantastic Beasts films, is on board as an executive producer for the new series. Additional executive producers include Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and Gardiner and Mylod themselves.

Release date & Where to Watch

Season ten of Halloween Baking Championship premieres Monday, Sept. 16, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET on Food Network. New episodes will be available to stream the next day on Max.

Pro Tip

Halloween Baking Championship season ten is set to thrill viewers in the US, but those outside the country might face geo-restrictions that block access to the show. Thankfully, there’s an easy solution! By using a safe VPN like NordVPN, you can bypass these restrictions and stream Halloween Baking Championship season ten from anywhere in the world.

Plot

Hosted by John Henson, the show welcomes ten talented bakers from across the country to compete in creating eerie, awe-inspiring desserts inspired by the haunted science lab, "Henson Laboratories." Each week, the bakers face off in two heats, with a chance at immunity on the line for the first time. Judges Stephanie Boswell, Carla Hall, and Zac Young decide who will earn the coveted title of Halloween Baking Champion and a $25,000 prize.

In the competition, bakers tackle both "Preliminary Heat" and "Main Heat" challenges. The "Preliminary Heat" requires bakers to create small pastries, like cookies or cakes, based on specific themes within a limited timeframe. The winner of this round gains a strategic advantage in the "Main Heat," where they have several hours to craft a larger dessert that aligns with a new, yet related, theme. As the competition progresses, one baker is eliminated each episode until the finale, where the remaining contestants compete in a winner-takes-all showdown for the title and the grand prize.

Additionally, "Halloween Wars" brings together eight teams of master pumpkin carvers, cake bakers, and sugar artists, each led by former champions. These teams compete to create monster-themed displays that capture the essence of classic Halloween monsters. The team that outshines the rest will be crowned the "Halloween Wars" champions.

Malicious NPM Packages Mimicking ‘noblox.js’ Target Roblox Developers’ Systems https://www.technadu.com/malicious-npm-packages-mimicking-noblox-js-target-roblox-developers-systems/547655/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 10:34:00 +0000 https://www.technadu.com/?p=547655
  • Attackers target unsuspecting developers with malicious NPM packages aimed at exfiltrating sensitive information.
  • These mimic the popular “noblox.js” library, particularly targeting the Roblox platform.
  • The hackers use advanced tactics to create a sense of legitimacy, making it easier for people to fall victim.

Dozens of malicious NPM packages designed to steal sensitive data and compromise systems have been detected mimicking the widely-used “noblox.js” library, particularly targeting the Roblox platform. This campaign, which began in August 2023, continues to pose a threat, with the latest malicious packages surfacing as recently as August 2024.

The Roblox platform has a massive user base of over 70 million daily active users. New malicious packages continue to appear despite multiple package takedowns, with some still active on the NPM registry.

The perpetrators of this campaign have employed advanced tactics like brandjacking, combo squatting, and carjacking, which enhance the perceived legitimacy of their malicious packages.

These tactics fall under the broader category of typosquatting. By creating package names like "noblox.js-async," "noblox.js-thread," and "noblox.js-api," attackers exploit developers' familiarity with multiple versions or extensions of libraries, tricking them into installing these malicious entities.

Fake Noblox.js Package

Starjacking involves linking malicious packages to the GitHub repository URL of the legitimate “noblox.js” package. This technique falsely inflates the popularity and trustworthiness of the malicious packages, misleading developers into believing they are genuine.

The malware can compromise Discord accounts via stealing tokens, collect sensitive system data, manipulate the Windows registry to execute malware whenever the Windows Settings app is opened, and deploying additional payloads such as the Quasar RAT.

Although these malicious packages have been removed from NPM, the compromised GitHub repository containing executable files remains active.

Quasar RAT is an open-source RAT widely used by malicious actors, mainly in phishing campaigns. It offers a rich set of capabilities and is freely available on public repositories.

Two Europeans Charged with ‘Swatting’ Plot Targeting Former U.S. President and Officials https://www.technadu.com/two-europeans-charged-with-swatting-plot-targeting-former-u-s-president-and-officials/547645/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 09:54:20 +0000 https://www.technadu.com/?p=547645
  • Two European men intimidated and threatened dozens of people by calling in fake reports of police emergencies at their homes.
  • An unnamed former US president and several members of Congress were allegedly targets of the swatting plot.
  • Threats reportedly included potential mass shootings at New York City synagogues and U.S. Capitol bomb threats.

Two European nationals are alleged to have engaged in a "swatting" campaign targeting a former U.S. president and several members of Congress from December 2020 through January 2024, as per court records unsealed on Wednesday. The individuals are charged with conspiracy and more than two dozen counts of making threats.

The federal indictment, handed down by a grand jury in Washington, D.C., accuses Thomasz Szabo, 26, of Romania, and Nemanja Radovanovic, 21, of Serbia, of orchestrating approximately 100 swatting calls.

These calls falsely reported emergencies to prompt aggressive police responses at the homes of their victims, including both private citizens and prominent public figures selected from Republican and as well as Democratic affiliations.

While the affidavit from a U.S. Secret Service agent does not specifically name the former president or other officials victimized, it categorizes one target as a "former elected official from the executive branch."

On January 9, 2024, Radovanovic allegedly falsified a report of a murder coupled with a threat to detonate an explosive device at this individual's residence. The indictment further details additional threats, including potential mass shootings at New York City synagogues and bomb threats directed at the U.S. Capitol and a university.

The indictment says Szabo told Radovanovic that they should pick targets from both the Republican and Democratic parties because they were not on any side. Most of the calls targeted public officials, public officials’ family members, and other prominent figures.

Secret Service agents questioned Szabo in Romania in January when he revealed involvement in both swatting and bomb threats since late 2020, while Radovanovic was questioned in Serbia in February.

Meanwhile, the U.S. has been the target of incessant attacks motivated by the upcoming presidential elections. In one example, an Iranian cybercriminal gang targeted the WhatsApp accounts of staffers in the administrations of President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, posing as support agents for tech companies.

Google Sheets Used as Command and Control Center in Campaign Impersonating Tax Authorities https://www.technadu.com/google-sheets-used-as-command-and-control-center-in-campaign-impersonating-tax-authorities/547635/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 09:42:41 +0000 https://www.technadu.com/?p=547635
  • A novel malicious email campaign impersonating various tax authorities worldwide distributes Voldemort.
  • The malware is used for intelligence gathering and additional payloads, adding cyber espionage to the mix.
  • Its customized functionalities include exploiting Google Sheets to issue commands for the malware.

A sophisticated malware campaign targeting over 70 organizations globally in sectors such as insurance, aerospace, and technology uses a novel method of leveraging Google Sheets as a command-and-control (C2) mechanism, as per the latest report by cybersecurity researchers at Proofpoint.

Active since August 5, 2024, the email phishing campaign impersonates tax authorities from the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, India, Japan, and other countries that allegedly inform the recipients about supposed changes to their tax filings. At the moment, there are six confirmed victims, including one sandbox or a known researcher.

The emails appearing to be from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, the UK HM Revenue & Customs, France’s Direction Générale des Finances Publiques, Germany’s Bundeszentralamt für Steuern, Italy’s Agenzia delle Entrate, India’s Income Tax Department, and Japan’s National Tax Agency contained Google AMP Cache URLs leading to a landing page hosted on InfinityFree

Emails impersonating HRMC and DGFIP. | Source: Proofpoint

Later on, the messages linked directly to the landing page, which includes a "Click to view document" link that checks the browser’s User Agent. The page prompts Windows-based users to execute a shortcut file (directly a LNK file or contained in a ZIP archive) disguised as a PDF, which eventually leads to the download and execution of the Voldemort backdoor.

If the system is not Windows-based, the browser redirects to an empty Google Drive URL that allows the threat actor to track browser and network details for victims who were not served any malicious content.

Executing the LNK triggers PowerShell to run Python from a WebDAV share. The threat actors harvest details such as the computer name, username, domain, Windows version information, and CPU details.

After a password-protected ZIP file called test.png or logo.png is downloaded from OpenDrive, it extracts the legitimate WebEx-related CiscoCollabHost.exe, which sideloads CiscoSparkLauncher.dll – the Voldemort payload.

Employing Google Sheets infrastructure for C2, data exfiltration, and command execution. The malware uses Google Sheets with a client token and needs to authenticate first.

The client ID, client secret, and refresh token value are taken from the decrypted configuration and sent to receive an access token, which the malware uses to read the six commands for the bot.

Proofpoint researchers recently observed an increase in the abuse of Cloudflare Tunnels, specifically the TryCloudflare feature that allows an attacker to create a one-time tunnel without an account.

North Korean Hackers Exploited Chrome Zero-Day to Deploy Rootkit and Steal Crypto https://www.technadu.com/north-korean-hackers-exploited-chrome-zero-day-to-deploy-rootkit-and-steal-crypto/547566/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 08:05:12 +0000 https://www.technadu.com/?p=547566
  • North Korean threat actor tracked as Citrine Sleet was seen exploiting two vulnerabilities in a crypto-stealing campaign.
  • One was a Chromium zero-day, and the other a sandbox escape exploit, both of which are now fixed.
  • The group targeted organizations that managed cryptocurrency and individuals connected to them.

Hackers tracked by Microsoft researchers as Citrine Sleet exploited a now-patched zero-day flaw in a core engine within Chromium to deploy a rootkit. The remote code execution (RCE) exploit for CVE-2024-7971 allowed the attackers to execute code within the sandboxed Chromium renderer process, according to the latest Microsoft security report.

After the successful RCE exploit, the group downloaded shellcode containing a now fixed Windows kernel CVE-2024-38106 sandbox escape exploit and the FudModule rootkit, which was created by the Lazarus APT group and previously associated with the North Korean threat group Diamond Sleet.

The threat actor distributed their unique Trojan malware via counterfeit websites that mimic legitimate cryptocurrency trading platforms (“voyagorclub[.]space”), where victims find fake job opportunities or download buttons for weaponized cryptocurrency wallets or trading apps.

Named AppleJeus, Citrine Sleet’s Trojan harvests data that can be used to gain control of the victim’s crypto assets.

The FudModule rootkit, which disrupts kernel security software through Direct Kernel Object Manipulation (DKOM) to evade detection, provides persistent backdoor access, allowing attackers to exfiltrate sensitive data or install additional malware.

North Korea-based Citrine Sleet primarily targets financial institutions for financial gain, particularly cryptocurrency organizations and individuals, the report says. The group’s social engineering techniques include extensive reconnaissance of the cryptocurrency industry and connected individuals.

Microsoft said it has notified “targeted and compromised customers,” but it did not provide more information on who was targeted or how many targets and victims this hacking campaign targeted. Google patched the bug two days later, on August 21.

The North Korean Lazarus APT group was seen abusing a now-patched zero-day flaw in the Windows Ancillary Function Driver for WinSock to elevate privileges, which allowed the attackers to install the FudModule rootkit.

One Tree Hill Reboot: Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton to Return, Where to Watch, plot, & Everything we know so far https://www.technadu.com/one-tree-hill-reboot-sophia-bush-hilarie-burton-to-return-where-to-watch-plot-everything-we-know-so-far/547548/ Mon, 02 Sep 2024 07:18:41 +0000 https://www.technadu.com/?p=547548

The much-anticipated One Tree Hill sequel is officially in the works, bringing back beloved characters Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer. Fans are thrilled that original stars Sophia Bush and Hilarie Burton are returning to their roles and also taking on the responsibilities of executive producers. This assures that the sequel will stay true to the spirit of the original series.

Release date & Where to Watch

The release date for the One Tree Hill sequel has yet to be announced, but we'll update this section as soon as it's confirmed. It is in early development at Netflix.

Plot

One Tree Hill originally aired in 2003. The series followed the lives of two half-brothers, Lucas and Nathan, as they navigated the complexities of high school and family dynamics. The series, which ran for nine seasons on The WB and later The CW, also focused on the deep friendships, romances, and struggles of characters like Brooke Davis, Peyton Sawyer, and Haley James Scott.

The sequel, set 20 years later, brings us back to Tree Hill, where Brooke and Peyton are now mothers of teenagers. The new series will explore the challenges they once faced—love, insecurities, and grief—but this time, through the lens of parenthood.

Brooke, who ended the original series married to Julian, is raising her twin sons, Davis and Jude, who will be featured as teens in the reboot. Meanwhile, Peyton is now married to Lucas, though Chad Michael Murray, who played Lucas, is reportedly not planning to return for the follow-up.

Danneel Ackles, who played Rachel Gatina, will be involved in the reboot as an executive producer and is in talks to reprise her role. The original creator, Mark Schwahn, has no involvement in the new series following public allegations of harassment made by several cast members, including Hilarie Burton and Sophia Bush, who now co-host the popular "Drama Queens" podcast with Bethany Joy Lenz.

This new chapter of One Tree Hill promises to revisit the familiar struggles of the original series, now from the perspective of the parents we've come to love.

Cast

  • Sophia Bush as Brooke Davis
  • Hilarie Burton Morgan as Peyton Sawyer
  • Daneel Ackles as Rachel
  • Jensen Ackles

What Happened at the end of One Tree Hill?

One Tree Hill ended with the characters finding resolution and happiness after years of drama and growth. Lucas and Nathan, initially half-brothers with a tense relationship, had their bond strengthened over time. Lucas married Peyton, and they left Tree Hill together to start a family. Brooke, who began as Peyton’s best friend and later faced trials in love and friendship, found her own happiness by marrying Julian, with whom she had twin boys, Davis and Jude.

Haley, Lucas's best friend, married Nathan while they were still in high school, and they welcomed their son Jamie during their senior year. As the series concluded, the characters matured, Peyton and Brooke's friendship solidified, and Rachel Gatina, once Brooke’s rival, became a close friend and part of the group. The new series will see Brooke and Julian’s twins return as teenagers, continuing the legacy of the Tree Hill family.

Behind the Scenes

Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Danneel Ackles are set to executive produce the One Tree Hill reboot. Ackles will also produce under her Chaos Machine banner alongside her husband, Jensen Ackles. The sequel series, developed by writer and executive producer Becky Hartman-Edwards (Firefly Lane, Parenthood), will be produced by Warner Bros. Television, the original series production studio.

Plot

The upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, set to begin production later this year, promises to be an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning gangster saga that spanned six seasons. Directed by Otto Bathurst, who helmed episodes from the show's first season in 2013, the film will bring the Shelby family back to the screen under the direction of Steven Knight, the show's creator.

Set during World War II, the movie will delve into an untold story about the Peaky Blinders from that era. While specific plot details remain under wraps, Knight has teased that the film will be an "explosive chapter" in the Shelby family's saga, continuing Tommy Shelby's journey toward redemption.

The last time we saw Tommy, he was riding off into the sunset in the season six finale, having discovered that his supposed terminal illness was a ruse. With his affairs in order and a new path ahead of him, the film is set to explore where this new road leads.

Knight has also confirmed that Polly Gray, played by the late Helen McCrory, will still have a presence in the film, emphasizing her fundamental role in the Peaky Blinders story. As fans eagerly await more details, one thing is clear: the Peaky Blinders movie will deliver the high-stakes drama and intense storytelling that has made the series a cultural phenomenon.

How did Peaky Blinders Season 6 end?

Season six of Peaky Blinders concludes with Tommy Shelby dismantling everything he's built over the past 15 years and riding off on his white horse, possibly reverting to his former ways. After killing his cousin Michael, in line with Aunt Polly's prophecy, Tommy is ready to leave the Shelby family behind and die alone, convinced he has an inoperable tuberculoma. However, a vision of his deceased daughter Ruby reveals that his diagnosis was a deception, prompting Tommy to embark on a new path—or perhaps return to an old one.

Who is Directing the Peaky Blinders Movie?

Steven Knight, the creator of Peaky Blinders, is set to direct the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders movie. Speaking to NME in April 2024, Knight hinted that fans would be "shocked" by the film's plot, thanks to a larger budget and enhanced production values. He expressed excitement about bringing Peaky Blinders fans together in one place to experience what he believes will be a significant step up in the series' storytelling. "We're ending this chapter, and we're all going to try to do our best," he shared, adding that the film will be an emotional rollercoaster, leaving audiences "shocked, delighted, and horrified."

Knight has been vocal about his plans for the film for several years. Back in July 2022, he told Heart Breakfast that he was nearly done writing the script and revealed that filming would take place in Digbeth, Birmingham, where the real-life Peaky Blinders once roamed. "Peaky's coming home," he said. Knight had originally planned to conclude the series with a movie, a vision he confirmed in January 2021, citing the impact of Covid-19 on his initial plans.

Despite his busy schedule, which includes creating Who Wants to be a Millionaire, writing the Princess Diana biopic Spencer, and developing the Netflix series All the Light We Cannot See, Knight remains focused on the Peaky Blinders film. In 2023, he shared that the movie would be set during World War II and advised fans to "expect the unexpected." By March 2024, Knight confirmed they were on track to start filming in September, bringing Peaky Blinders back to its roots in Birmingham.

Plot

The fifth season of Yellowstone raises critical questions about how the show will address Kevin Costner's departure and the fate of his character, John Dutton. With Costner not returning for any scenes, John's fate will likely be determined offscreen—whether through a dramatic death or a quiet exit. Given the tension between John and his son Jamie, a violent end wouldn't be surprising.

The Dutton family's ranching empire will be significantly impacted by John's absence. The final episodes are expected to focus on a power struggle among John's children—Jamie, Beth, and Kayce—as they navigate their complex relationships and alliances. Additionally, John’s political role as governor complicates matters; if he were to be killed, it would be a political assassination, and his impending impeachment could lead to his removal from power without a dramatic death.

As the season progresses, the Duttons face escalating conflict. Beth is determined to eliminate Jamie after learning about the Train Station, while Jamie conspires with Sarah Atwood to secure his own position. Rip is absent, leading the ranch hands to Texas, potentially linking the main series to the upcoming 6666 spinoff. Meanwhile, Jamie's impeachment threat looms over John’s conservation plans for the ranch, while the Broken Rock tribe, led by Chief Rainwater, could influence the outcome of the Duttons' schemes regarding a federal pipeline.

Tensions are high as the series builds toward its conclusion, with the possibility of significant casualties among the main characters. The Dutton family's saga unfolds against the backdrop of Montana's stunning landscape, showcasing their struggles to maintain their legacy amidst betrayal, political strife, and environmental threats. As the internal family feud escalates, the Duttons remain committed to protecting their heritage, bracing for an inevitable clash between the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Official Teasers

A few months before the debut of Yellowstone season five part two, Paramount shared a teaser on Instagram featuring Rip armed with a gun as he approaches the Dutton mansion. While minimal footage from the season is shown, the teaser hints at the violent conclusion anticipated since season one.

Days after the first teaser, Yellowstone released a second trailer on Instagram. This one features clips of the Dutton mansion accompanied by character narration. It emphasizes the absence of Costner's John Dutton and hint at the patriarch's potential death in the second half of season five.

The latest trailer for Yellowstone season five part two, titled "Generations," includes footage of the now-departed Kevin Costner and suggests that the ongoing feud between Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Jamie (Wes Bentley) remains unresolved. It opens with John Dutton reflecting on the family's ranching legacy, then hints at chaos, suggesting infighting and family strife could tear the Duttons apart.

Why is Kevin Costner leaving Yellowstone?

Kevin Costner is leaving Yellowstone to focus on directing his Western film Horizon and due to legal disputes over his compensation for the second half of season five.

In a June 2023 social media video, Costner confirmed he won't return for the remaining episodes of season five, citing scheduling conflicts with Horizon. He expressed disappointment with how the situation was portrayed, explaining that delays in Yellowstone's production interfered with his commitments. Check out the video below.

Costner had initially offered to finish his character's arc, even suggesting filming John Dutton's death scene, but Paramount and creator Taylor Sheridan didn't accept. In a GQ interview, Costner revealed frustration with contract negotiations, explaining that changes to his original agreement for multiple seasons led to his decision to leave. He also indicated dissatisfaction with the lack of support from his co-stars amid media speculation.

In Sept. 2023, Costner threatened to sue the show's producers over a "pay or play" clause, claiming he was owed $12 million for the second half of season five. Despite his departure, neither Paramount nor the show's producers have commented on the situation.

Is Yellowstone Ending with Season 5?

Yellowstone might not end with season five, as previously announced. Reports from Aug. 2024 suggest Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are in talks for a potential sixth season, although Paramount Network has not confirmed this.

Initially, season five was to be the final season, with its last episodes set for Nov. 2023, but strikes delayed them to Nov. 10, 2024. Kevin Costner confirmed he won't return, but creator Taylor Sheridan insists John Dutton's storyline will still conclude, possibly extending the season beyond its planned six episodes.

While season 5B was expected to be the last, a sixth season may still happen.

Yellowstone Prequels, Spin-offs, & Future of the Series

Paramount has been expanding the Yellowstone universe with several prequels and spin-offs. The first prequel, 1883, which aired in late 2021, tells the origin story of the Dutton family's journey to Montana. It starred Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Isabel May. This one-season story concluded with the death of key characters, leaving no room for a second season.

Following this, 1923 premiered in Dec. 2022, focusing on the next generation of Duttons during the Prohibition era, led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. Despite production delays due to the 2023 strikes, the series was renewed for a second season, with eight more episodes expected to complete the story. Additionally, Paramount has greenlit 1944, another prequel, and 6666, a spin-off set at the historic Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, though the latter is currently on hold.

In August 2024, Paramount announced The Madison, a contemporary spin-off originally titled 2024. Starring Michelle Pfeiffer, this series explores grief and human connection as a wealthy New York family relocates to Montana after a tragic plane crash. The cast includes Matthew Fox, Patrick J. Adams, and Amiah Miller, and the release is targeted for 2025.

As Paramount plans for the future beyond Kevin Costner, there’s speculation that Yellowstone could continue with a surprise sixth season, possibly focusing on characters played by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser. Taylor Sheridan, the mastermind behind Yellowstone, has also hinted at more prequels, ensuring the Yellowstone universe will continue to expand with new stories and characters, even as the original series nears its conclusion.

Where is Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 Filmed?

Yellowstone season five, part two, has officially resumed production after nearly two years. Filming took place on location in Montana, just as in previous seasons.

Behind the Scenes

The series is co-created by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Taylor Sheridan (Wind River, Hell or High Water, Sicario) and television producer John Linson (Great Expectations, Lords of Dogtown, Sons of Anarchy).

Sheridan and Linson also serve as executive producers alongside Kevin Costner, Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Bob Yari, Stephen Kay, Michael Friedman, Christina Voros, and Keith Cox. The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, with Paramount Global Content Distribution handling the distribution. Brian Tyler and Breton Vivian composed the music for Yellowstone, and the series features the award-winning cinematography of Ben Richardson (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fault in Our Stars, Mare of Easttown).
